The Knocks are a New York story through and through. They met as 19-year-old college students, late one night in a studio at the New School. Ben Ruttner, known as “B-Roc,” DJed clubs as a PM day job, and James Patterson, known as “JPatt,” played the organ at a church outside the city.

Their debut album 55 is a triumph, a resolutely DIY dance album that pulses with the heart of the city. It’s a love letter to the old-school way of making music, and to that classic story of two kids who came to NYC to make it big. The album features a star-studded cast; a diverse list of musical styles and artistic approaches, from New York’s hip hop legend Cam’ron to pop-sensation Carly Rae Jepsen. Idolator has called it “pop perfection”, Pop Crush adding that “they’re [The Knocks] coming for an early best album of the year”. SPIN Magazine gave 55 an 8 out 10 album review and declaring it one of their top 66 albums of 2016. The album twists and turns with unexpected guests and genre-bending flavor. Artists like GRAMMY winner Wycelf Jean, X Ambassadors, Fetty Wap, and Walk The Moon each provide an unparalleled gusto best described by VICE’s NOISEY as “bombastic, funk-finagled, and fun”.

2016 has proven to be a breakout year on the stage for The Knocks. Praised as “15 Best Things We Saw During NYC Fest Weekend” by Rolling Stone and “Best of Bonnaroo 2016” by Billboard, The Knocks have had a busy summer wowing the crowds at festivals across the country and bringing unparalleled energy to the stage in support of A-level talent including Justin Bieber, Ellie Goulding, The 1975, and Bruno Mars.

XXYYXX is the electronic project of Orlando, FL’s Marcel Everett. Starting purely out of experimentation, Marcel’s taste for electronic music has evolved from the low-fidelity of vintage sounds to crisp and clean scenes of serenity. Improvisational jazz and abstract hip hop serve as worthy emblems of inspiration. His productions take steps across a unique spectrum of bass-heavy sounds with experience in minimalist ambience. Provoking a myriad of images, the music is meditative and emotive. R&B rhythms and soulful melodies are staples that propel the music forward, creating open environments that feed into moments of movement

For New York duo SOFI TUKKER, comprised of Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern, these words are not just a guiding life principle, but how they measure the music they create. SOFI TUKKER’s “holy trinity,” as they describe it, is movement, community, and joy. Despite their yin-and-yang dynamic and coming from different worlds, the pair shares a deep-rooted spiritual connection around their music.

Halpern was on track to become a professional basketball player, focusing on NCAA stardom and training, before health problems put his athletic dreams on hold and caused his plans to take a serendipitous turn. While recuperating and on bed rest for nine months, Halpern taught himself how to produce electronic music and DJ, adding to the musical skills he had developed in numerous bands during his grade school years.

Hawley-Weld is something of a renaissance woman. Born in Germany, spending her youth in rural Canada and Italy, her international background sparked studies in International development, Brazilian poetry, yoga, and even West African drums and music. As soon as Tucker and Sophie first met, when Halpern stumbled upon Hawley-Weld singing bossa nova in a warehouse, they instantly jumped at the chance to collaborate.

Around this time, Tucker earned a gig supporting NY dance outfit The Knocks, who eventually helped nurture their early demos. “They became instant family, and encouraged us to pursue the collaboration for real,” Tucker recalls. Sophie and Tucker immediately made the jump to New York City and began working on their debut EP at the Knocks’ HeavyRoc Studios. That first week, they penned their debut single “Drinkee,” an instant viral smash that features Portuguese lyrics by Brazilian poet Chacal, now a friend of the group. After putting the track up on Soundcloud, “Drinkee” quickly topped the Spotify viral charts in South America and Europe, popped up on radio stations in countries the band had never visited, and perhaps most prominently featured as the soundtrack to the latest Apple Watch campaign.

Sophie and Tucker also set their sights on putting together a live show, which combines the duo’s unique personalities, instrumental skills, and their need to get a room full of people dancing. In their short live career, they have appeared at everything from Fashion Week to Art Basel to the CMJ Music Marathon, and are set to take their show across the USA and the globe later in the year.

The band has just finished their debut EP. The title, “Soft Animals,” is a nod to poet Mary Oliver. Their second track, “Matadora,” premiered the first week of 2016 on Apple’s world-spanning Beats 1 radio and cutting-edge NYC music bible the FADER, and topped the Hype Machine Popular chart before the track was even 3 days old. The EP promises a number of surprises, and shows Sophie and Tucker have created one of the most unique sounds the music community has heard in years – a heady cocktail that blends global instrumentation with modern technology, while sounding anything but machine-made. People have tried to categorize them, but nobody can seem to agree what box to put them in. That suits them just fine.

RITON

Like many before him, Riton's career in dance music began in 1990s dance culture and the long trips up and down the country to the Renaissance raves, prompting him to launch his own promotions closer to his home in Newcastle. After becoming an established fixture in the early 2000's after working with Scissor Sisters, M.I.A., Chromeo, and Soulwax---Riton partnered with tastemaker French record label ED BANGER & the late DJ Medhi to create a duo called "CARTE BLANCHE" which went on to become one of the label's biggest-selling acts. After the tragic and sudden death of Mehdi, Riton understandably kept a reasonably low profile in the year following the accident, until he reemerged in 2013 with the four-track EP Lost My Mind, a track from which boasted a cameo from French electroclash stalwart Miss Kittin. Another EP, still with the Ed Banger label, was to follow -- 2014's Bad Guy RiRi, a release that further cemented the marriage of Riton's funk and soul sensibilities with the Ed Banger label's muscular French house sound so heavily associated with popular mid-2000s electro acts like Mr. Oizo and Justice.

Meanwhile, in late 2015, another of Smithson's collaborative projects, Die Verboten, released the confusingly titled LP 2007, so-called because of when the material was recorded (and subsequently shelved for the next eight years). The group, which consisted of Riton alongside 2ManyDJs brothers David and Stephen Dewaele and designer Fergus "Fergadelic" Purcell, aptly described the record's early Kraftwerk-inspired cosmic jams as space rock, due to the live drums, bass, and synths having played such a prominent part in the music. At that time, this project seemed to have deeply influenced Riton, as his alternative alias Eine Kleine Nacht Musik surfaced in 2008 with a heavily Krautrock-infused self-titled album.

Riton's in-demand remixing and producing work continued to flow -- his 2015 co-production on Mark Ronson's Daffodils, featuring Tame Impala's Kevin Parker, is one such notable example -- as well as touring with Ronson on the 2014 Back to Back tour. The 2016 release of his own tech-house banger Rinse & Repeat, which featured Lagos/New York vocalist Kah-Lo, was extremely well received, garnering widespread airplay and the number one spot on the BBC Radio 1 dance chart for several weeks.

Xavier Omär, wasn’t supposed to be a singer. Let him tell it, spitting hot 16’s with ease were the cards to be dealt for him.

In just a matter of years, Omär, who many may have known as SPZRKT once upon a time, has taken his rare breed of R&B talents from his San Antonio bedroom to the internet to hundreds of unsuspecting individuals who learn about his undeniable artistry with when he steps foot on a stage. “I didn’t have anything when I started,” Omär recalls. “My intention when I first made music was to just put it out in places and hope somebody would recognize and know it was me.”

Today, the singer-songwriter has caught the attention of not only Red Bull’s artist development program but indie label/creative crew Soulection with his sound that in one moment flips rhythm and blues on its head with elements of pop and jazz and breathes new life into an ever-evolving genre.

AVALON YOUNG

22 year old R&B singer and songwriter, Avalon Young , was born in San Diego, California and now resides in Los Angeles. Young’s relevant writings and artistry are relatable to her fan base, which she attributes her success as an independent artist. Her voice has been described by Billboard as “dreamy” and her performances “have the audience in the palm of her hand”.

With the anticipated August 30th release of her album Shift, Young charged the iTunes R&B Album Charts to #2.

After being dismissed during the initial American Idol audition in 2010 at the age of 16, Young was scouted for a second audition by the shows producers in 2015 due to the popularity of her YouTube Channel. While hesitant, family and friends encouraged Young to take the audition. After her successful San Francisco performance, Avalon Young became the show’s organic R&B singer and American Idols Farewell Season Top 8 Finalist.

Since April 2016, Young accompanied both Jeff Bernat and Gnash on tour and she is currently making appearances across the country, performing her original music.
